AON3D’s next generation flagship high temperature 3D printer, Hylo™, and accompanying AI-driven G-Code optimization software, Basis™, have received finalist designations for two categories in TCT’s 2024 Innovation Awards. The TCT Awards recognize every year’s most innovative new technologies and applications within the additive manufacturing space. Here’s a breakdown of AON3D’s new technology and corresponding categories for which are nominated.

Basis™ AI-Driven Part Property Maximization – TCT Software Award Finalist

Currently, open market slicers utilize “one size fits all” print settings, applying thermals, speeds, and cooling in a static fashion regardless of part geometry, features, and material. As a result, material extrusion parts may physically look good but possess vastly different mechanical properties across single parts and different geometries.

AON3D’s Basis™ additive manufacturing software utilizes ultra-fast, AI-driven transient thermal simulation to emulate the 3D printing process, considering factors such as part geometry, orientation, print settings, machine convective workflows, and material. From the resulting simulation, Basis™ applies dynamic print settings, millimeter by millimeter, to minimize potential print defects and maximize part properties before ever hitting print.

A Basis™ ULTEM 9085 part simulation shows regional overheating, leading to anisotropic properties, compared to Basis optimized properties where interlayer weld strength has been maximized throughout.

In preliminary tests, AON3D’s G-Code optimization software, with AON3D Hylo™, were able to achieve up to 85% stronger parts, printed ULTEM™ 9085, compared to default print settings. It should be noted that the default process parameters used in the test were tuned specifically to the AON3D Hylo, which further serves to indicate that print settings must be tuned to each individual part and material, a task which traditionally would take hours to days from a professional highly skilled in slicing.

Hylo™ In-Situ Quality Verification – TCT Hardware Award Finalist (Polymer systems)

AON3D’s new high temperature 3D printer, Hylo™, features numerous new innovative features intended to make it easier to print high performance polymers, such as PEEK and ULTEM™, larger, faster, and stronger then ever before. Among those features, AON3D introduced a new generation of digital twins which enable new methods of non-destructive part examination (NDE), thus improving part confidence and reducing downstream quality management burdens.

Enabling near real-time part quality verification and visible/hidden defect detection, AON3D combines positional data with data streams from Hylo’s 25+ integrated sensors. Detectable defects include part deformation, debris inclusions, over/under extrusion, poor layer welding, and more.
